Bryce Canyon National Park, is one of scenic crown jewels of Utah's National Parks. It is located about 2 1/2 hours north of St. George, Utah. Bryce Canyon is a wondrous display of colorful rock pinnacles and spires (known as hoodoos) among a series of natural amphitheaters. The views from the rims of the amphitheaters are breathtaking – exhibits of the work of millions of years of wind and water, which broke down the limestone of the Claron formation to transform it into hoodoos of every hue, size and shape. Visitors can sit, take in the scenery and let their imaginations run wild deciding what each formation resembles. Bryce Canyon's formations have taken on fanciful names according to what they look like, including Thor's Hammer, The Poodle, Chinese Wall, Queen Victoria and Sinking Ship. Visitors view the park's unique scenery by exploring over 50 miles of hiking trails in Bryce Canyon and driving the park's 18-mile scenic drive, which features 14 viewpoints along its route.
Lying on the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, the diverse plants and animals of Bryce Canyon are among three distinct climatic zones – spruce and fir forests at its highest elevations to juniper and pinion forests at its lower climes. The park is home to more than 1,000 plant species, over 100 species of birds and dozens of mammals. On clear days, the park offers over 100 miles of visibility. The Bryce Canyon night sky is one of the darkest in the nation and is ideal for stargazing. As such, park rangers regularly offer astronomy programs, as well as other activities, including geology talks, guided hikes and evening programs.
